The Amber Eye | Gold Leopard Art Photograph by Zack Zublena

In 2012, in South Africa, in the wild reserves beside Kruger Park, a leopard looked into my lens. Four years later, in Los Angeles, a woman painted in gold stood before it. Ten years after that, the two finally met.

Here, they are one. The leopard's amber gaze rises through the skin of the woman, her gilded hand brushing across the face as if to veil a secret, or to let it show. Spots become shadows on her arm, and gold dust settles on fur like pollen on a summer evening. It is impossible to say where she ends and the wild begins.

Sensual, feminine and untamed, this is a reverie in two bodies: the quiet power of the animal, and the grace of a woman who carries that power without a word. Their gaze meets, and for a moment each becomes the dream of the other.

Two photographs, ten years apart, part of the Animal Fusion collection.
