Animal Fusion in San Francisco: Gold, the Lion and the Leopard by the Golden Gate
San Francisco was born from gold. In 1849, the Gold Rush turned a small settlement on the bay into one of the great cities of the world, and its emblem still carries the word: the Golden Gate. For an artist who has spent ten years painting the human body in gold, I could not imagine a more fitting city. That is why I wanted to bring Animal Fusion, my collection where the golden body meets the lion and the leopard, to San Francisco.
As a Californian, I have a special affection for San Francisco. Los Angeles has been my home for many years, and San Francisco is its northern counterpart: the other great city of my home state, with a completely different soul. Where Los Angeles is sun and spectacle, San Francisco is fog, hills, light on the bay and a free, inventive spirit. It is a city of pioneers, from the Gold Rush to the creative revolutions of today, and pioneers have always been the people most open to new kinds of art.
For a photographer, San Francisco is also a sacred place. Its great modern art museum was one of the first in the world to take photography seriously as an art form. The city looks at images closely, and it values work that is personal, original and authentic. Those are the values at the heart of Animal Fusion.
It all began in South Africa, in 2012. It was there, in the golden light of the savanna, that I took my first steps as a professional photographer. I remember those mornings leaving before dawn, the silence of the bush, and the moment when, suddenly, a leopard appears in the tall grass and rests its gaze on you. That gaze never leaves you. It taught me patience, humility and respect. Above all, it taught me what presence truly means.
Since then, two passions have guided my life as an artist. On one side, the big cats I love so deeply. On the other, the human body painted in gold, and especially the woman: feline, magnetic, sovereign. For years, these two worlds lived separately in my work. With Animal Fusion, they finally meet.

From the African Savanna to the Golden Gate
I returned to South Africa, to the Greater Kruger region, where I was fortunate to stay at the magnificent lodges of Londolozi and Singita. There, nature is not a backdrop: it moves through you. You spend hours following a lioness and her cubs, waiting for a leopard to come down from its tree, watching for the perfect light at dusk.
I photographed the lions and leopards in this collection myself, in the wild, in their own territory. None of them comes from a stock library. Each one carries the memory of an encounter, a suspended moment I had the privilege to live.
The Bay Area understands that bond with nature. Few cities live so close to wild landscapes: the headlands of Marin across the Golden Gate, the redwoods of Muir Woods, the Pacific coast stretching south. San Franciscans know that the most powerful experiences often happen when we step outside the city and let nature move through us. That is what I felt in the savanna, and what I try to give back in every photograph.
The lion moves me with its nobility. It is the most social of all cats, and it is the lionesses who lead the hunt and protect the pride, as the Smithsonian's National Zoo reminds us. The leopard fascinates me with its mystery: solitary, agile, invisible until the very last moment, strong enough to carry its prey high into the trees, as National Geographic describes. One embodies sovereignty, the other enigma. Both embody a kind of absolute beauty.

The Golden Woman, Feline and Magnetic
Since 2016, I have been painting bodies in gold and photographing them as living sculptures. What has always struck me about the women I photograph is their feline side: a way of moving, of holding themselves, of looking into the lens with the same quiet intensity as a big cat in the savanna.
San Francisco has always celebrated freedom of expression and the beauty of the body as a form of art. It is a city where people are free to be fully themselves. The women of Animal Fusion share that freedom: independent, confident, unapologetically present.
With this collection, I wanted to make the invisible bond between woman and animal visible. The leopard's rosettes flow across golden skin. The lion's gaze melts into a woman's face. The figure does not wear the animal like a costume: she becomes it, the way a dancer becomes the music.

Gold, From Ancient Egypt to the Gold Rush
I am not the first to dream of this fusion. In ancient Egypt, the lion-headed goddess Sakhmet, "the powerful one," embodied both strength and healing. Her statues, carved more than three thousand years ago, are preserved today at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. And that same civilization reserved gold for the gods, because it never tarnishes, as The Met explains in its essay on gold in ancient Egypt.
San Francisco has its own story with gold. The Forty-Niners came searching for it in the rivers and hills of California, and their dreams built a city. For the Egyptians, gold was the flesh of the gods. For the Forty-Niners, it was the promise of a new life. For me, gold is light and transformation, painted directly on the human body. With Animal Fusion, I bring the sacred animal and the sacred metal together for our time.
Real Women, Real Big Cats, Real Gold. No AI.
For me, this is essential. Every woman in this collection is a real person, whom I painted in gold by hand and photographed in the studio. Every big cat is a wild animal I photographed myself in South Africa. In an age of AI-generated images, I want every element of my work to have been lived, felt and shared. I explain this in more detail on my page No AI Art, Real People.
San Francisco is at the heart of the technology revolution, and that is precisely why I think authenticity matters so much here. In the city where so much of the digital world is invented, a photograph that is entirely real, made by hand with real people and real animals, takes on a new value. Gold has been worked by hand for millennia, from Egyptian goldsmiths to the master gilders of Florence, and institutions like the Getty Conservation Institute still document these traditional crafts. My work humbly continues that lineage, with the human body as its surface.
What Each Work Carries
- The lion and lioness: courage, leadership and radiant confidence.
- The leopard: independence, intuition and quiet strength.
- Gold: light, permanence and the sacred potential of the human body.

Animal Fusion in San Francisco Homes
San Francisco interiors have a character all their own. In a Victorian or Edwardian home in Pacific Heights or Presidio Heights, with bay windows, high ceilings and ornate moldings, the gold answers the history of the architecture and glows warmly on grey, foggy days. In a contemporary home in Sea Cliff or on Russian Hill, with glass walls overlooking the bay and the Golden Gate Bridge, a large golden work becomes a second sunset in the room.

In a converted warehouse loft in SoMa or Dogpatch, with exposed brick and concrete, a leopard print brings depth and warmth to raw materials. Across the bridge in Sausalito, Belvedere and Mill Valley, in the vineyard estates of Napa and Sonoma, or in the homes of Atherton and Palo Alto, the warm tones of the savanna echo the golden hills of California. In a bedroom, a leopard adds sensuality and serenity. In an entrance, a lion welcomes every guest with strength.

Pairs, Diptychs and Triptychs
I designed this collection as a dialogue. Two works hung side by side create rhythm, symmetry and a silent conversation between the woman and the animal. The tall, narrow walls between the windows of a Victorian home are perfect for a pair hung side by side, while the open walls of a loft welcome a triptych.

For San Francisco Collectors, Interior Designers and Hotels
San Francisco is one of the great cities for photography. At SFMOMA, the Pritzker Center for Photography is the largest space permanently dedicated to photography in any art museum in the United States. Every January, the FOG Design+Art fair at Fort Mason brings together international galleries and design dealers, and the showrooms of Jackson Square and the galleries around the city keep the conversation going all year long.
My photographs already live in more than 140 David Lloyd clubs across the UK and Europe, where they are seen by over one million members. I would love to bring Animal Fusion to San Francisco and the Bay Area: to the grand hotels of Nob Hill and the boutique hotels of Union Square, to restaurants and lounges, to spas and wellness spaces, to wineries in Napa and Sonoma, to corporate collections, and to the homes of those who, like me, love wild nature, beauty and gold.
If you are an interior designer, an art advisor or a hospitality professional in San Francisco or the Bay Area, I would be delighted to work with you: selecting works for a specific project, adapting formats to your walls, or preparing a larger series for a hotel, an office or a residence. Contact me directly to discuss your project. San Francisco is in my home state, so I would be happy to meet you in person.
