Seattle: Gold for the City of Silver Light

Seattle lives under a soft, silver sky for much of the year. The light that drifts in from Puget Sound is gentle and grey, beautiful in its own way, but it makes warmth precious. That is why, in the city's finest homes, hotels and offices, gold has a special power: it brings the glow of a sunset indoors, even in November.

Zack Zublena's gold fine art photographs were made to carry that warmth. Real people, their bodies entirely covered in gold paint, emerge from deep black backgrounds like living sculptures. In a Seattle interior of timber, glass and stone, they become a source of light in their own right.

A City of Glass, Light and Sculpture

Few cities have embraced art made from light like Seattle. At Seattle Center, in the shadow of the Space Needle, Chihuly Garden and Glass celebrates the luminous glass sculpture of the Tacoma-born artist Dale Chihuly. On the waterfront, the Seattle Art Museum's Olympic Sculpture Park sets monumental works against the backdrop of Elliott Bay and the Olympic Mountains.

Photography has a strong home here too. At the University of Washington, the Henry Art Gallery holds an important photography collection, enriched by major gifts reported by UW News. And every month, the Pioneer Square First Thursday Art Walk opens the city's historic gallery district to collectors and curious visitors alike. Readers of The Seattle Times, Seattle Met, The Stranger and the Puget Sound Business Journal know that art here is part of everyday life.

Hotels with a Northwest Soul

Seattle's best hotels tell the story of their region through art. The Four Seasons Seattle has shared its own art collection, and in Pioneer Square, a new hotel filled with local art was celebrated by Cascade PBS. For hoteliers, art has become a way to give guests a sense of place.

  • Waterfront lobbies: a large gold photograph answers the views of Elliott Bay with warmth and presence.
  • Belltown and Capitol Hill bars: gold on black glows under low evening light on rainy nights.
  • Downtown and South Lake Union: in sleek, contemporary hotels, a sculptural figure adds humanity to glass and steel.
  • Bellevue: in luxury towers across Lake Washington, statement art gives lobbies and suites a signature.
  • Guest rooms: one photograph above the bed turns a room into a warm retreat.

Homes on the Water and in the Trees

Seattle's most beautiful homes are shaped by water, forest and mountain views. In Medina and on Mercer Island, contemporary houses open onto Lake Washington. In Madison Park, Queen Anne and Magnolia, classic homes look out over the Sound, and on Bainbridge Island, cedar and glass houses sit among the trees. These interiors are rich in natural materials, wood, stone and soft grey light, and a gold photograph brings the warmth they sometimes need.

Workplaces, Wellness and the Human Touch

Seattle is home to some of the world's most influential companies, and their offices, lounges and executive floors increasingly use art to bring humanity to the workplace. The city also lives wellness, from yoga studios and private gyms to luxury spas. Zack Zublena's gold figures, many of them yogis, dancers and athletes, belong naturally in these spaces. His work has been installed across more than 120 David Lloyd fitness and wellness clubs in the UK and Europe, seen by more than one million members. Read the David Lloyd story.

Practical Notes for Seattle

  • Soft light: Seattle's grey days make warm, dimmable lighting essential. Lit well, the gold glows even on the darkest afternoon.
  • Damp air: choose sealed conservation framing to protect prints from humidity, especially in waterfront and island homes.
  • Seismic safety: Seattle sits in an active seismic region. Use security hangers that lock the frame to the wall, especially above beds and seating.
  • Summer sun: long summer days bring strong light. Keep works out of direct sun and choose UV-protective glazing.

How do you protect fine art photography from Seattle's humidity?

Use sealed conservation framing, hang works on interior walls rather than cold exterior walls when possible, and avoid bathrooms or rooms without good ventilation.
