Animal Fusion in Boston: Gold, the Lion and the Leopard for New England Collectors

Boston is a city that takes art seriously. It is a city of museums, libraries and private collections, where beauty is studied, discussed and cherished for generations. That is exactly why I wanted to share Animal Fusion, my collection where the golden body meets the lion and the leopard, with Boston.

There is one place in Boston that speaks to me more than any other: the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, in the Fenway. Isabella Stewart Gardner built her museum in the spirit of a Venetian palazzo, around a courtyard filled with flowers, and filled it with the art she loved. I have a deep love for Italy. My family name comes from Zubiena, a small village in the north of Italy, and I studied painting at the Accademia del Giglio in Florence. So the idea of an Italian palazzo in the heart of Boston, built by a passionate collector, moves me deeply. It tells me that this is a city where art is lived personally, not just displayed.

Boston has that rare balance I love: deep roots and a restless curiosity. The brownstones of Back Bay and the gas-lit streets of Beacon Hill sit a few minutes from the contemporary galleries of the South End and the waterfront of the Seaport. Tradition and audacity, side by side. In its own way, that is what Animal Fusion is about: an ancient idea, the fusion of human and animal, expressed in a contemporary way.

It all began in South Africa, in 2012. It was there, in the golden light of the savanna, that I took my first steps as a professional photographer. I remember those mornings leaving before dawn, the silence of the bush, and the moment when, suddenly, a leopard appears in the tall grass and rests its gaze on you. That gaze never leaves you. It taught me patience, humility and respect. Above all, it taught me what presence truly means.

Since then, two passions have guided my life as an artist. On one side, the big cats I love so deeply. On the other, the human body painted in gold, and especially the woman: feline, magnetic, sovereign. For years, these two worlds lived separately in my work. With Animal Fusion, they finally meet.

From the African Savanna to Franklin Park

I returned to South Africa, to the Greater Kruger region, where I was fortunate to stay at the magnificent lodges of Londolozi and Singita. There, nature is not a backdrop: it moves through you. You spend hours following a lioness and her cubs, waiting for a leopard to come down from its tree, watching for the perfect light at dusk.

I photographed the lions and leopards in this collection myself, in the wild, in their own territory. None of them comes from a stock library. Each one carries the memory of an encounter, a suspended moment I had the privilege to live.

Boston, too, has its lions. At Franklin Park Zoo, Bostonians can meet African lions, and Zoo New England supports lion conservation in Africa. I find it beautiful that a city so far from the savanna cares so much about these animals. It is the same care I try to bring to every photograph.

The lion moves me with its nobility. It is the most social of all cats, and it is the lionesses who lead the hunt and protect the pride, as the Smithsonian's National Zoo reminds us. The leopard fascinates me with its mystery: solitary, agile, invisible until the very last moment, strong enough to carry its prey high into the trees, as National Geographic describes. One embodies sovereignty, the other enigma. Both embody a kind of absolute beauty.

The Golden Woman, Feline and Magnetic

Since 2016, I have been painting bodies in gold and photographing them as living sculptures. What has always struck me about the women I photograph is their feline side: a way of moving, of holding themselves, of looking into the lens with the same quiet intensity as a big cat in the savanna.

Boston has its own kind of feline elegance: intelligent, composed, quietly confident. It is the elegance of a city of scholars and artists, where presence comes from depth rather than display. That is the kind of presence I look for in every portrait.

With Animal Fusion, I wanted to make the invisible bond between woman and animal visible. The leopard's rosettes flow across golden skin. The lion's gaze melts into a woman's face. The figure does not wear the animal like a costume: she becomes it, the way a dancer becomes the music.

An Idea Three Thousand Years Old

I am not the first to dream of this fusion. In ancient Egypt, the lion-headed goddess Sakhmet, "the powerful one," embodied both strength and healing. Her statues, carved more than three thousand years ago, are preserved today at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. And that same civilization reserved gold for the gods, because it never tarnishes, as The Met explains in its essay on gold in ancient Egypt.

Bostonians do not need to travel far to feel that ancient world. The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston is home to one of the great collections of ancient Egyptian art in the world. Walking among those sculptures and treasures, you understand how long humanity has dreamed of gods with animal faces and bodies of gold. With Animal Fusion, I bring these two ancient languages together for our time.

Real Women, Real Big Cats, Real Gold. No AI.

For me, this is essential. Every woman in this collection is a real person, whom I painted in gold by hand and photographed in the studio. Every big cat is a wild animal I photographed myself in South Africa. In an age of AI-generated images, I want every element of my work to have been lived, felt and shared. I explain this in more detail on my page No AI Art, Real People.

Gold has been worked by hand for millennia, from Egyptian goldsmiths to the master gilders of Florence. Having studied painting in Florence myself, I have a special respect for that tradition, and institutions like the Getty Conservation Institute still document these traditional crafts. My work humbly continues that lineage, with the human body as its surface. In a city like Boston, where craftsmanship and authenticity are deeply valued, I believe that matters.

What Each Work Carries

  • The lion and lioness: courage, leadership and radiant confidence.
  • The leopard: independence, intuition and quiet strength.
  • Gold: light, permanence and the sacred potential of the human body.

Animal Fusion in Boston Homes

Boston interiors have a character of their own. In a Back Bay brownstone or a Beacon Hill townhouse, with tall windows, crown moldings, fireplaces and dark wood, the gold glows like candlelight and answers the history of the architecture. During the long New England winters, that warmth matters: a golden work becomes a source of light in the room.

In a converted loft in the South End or a contemporary apartment in the Seaport, with exposed brick or floor-to-ceiling glass over the harbor, a large leopard print brings depth and intensity. From Brookline and Chestnut Hill to the summer houses of Cape Cod, Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard, the warm tones of the savanna bring a different kind of light. In a library or a study, a lion brings quiet authority. In a bedroom, a leopard adds sensuality and serenity.

Pairs, Diptychs and Triptychs

I designed this collection as a dialogue. Two works hung side by side create rhythm, symmetry and a silent conversation between the woman and the animal. The vertical proportions of Boston brownstones, with their narrow, elegant walls between tall windows, are perfect for a pair of works hung side by side or one above the other.

For Boston Collectors, Interior Designers and Hotels

Boston's art scene is remarkably rich: the galleries of Newbury Street, the SoWa Art + Design District in the South End, the Institute of Contemporary Art on the Seaport waterfront, and of course its great museums. It is also a city of fine hotels, restaurants and wellness spaces, from Back Bay to the Seaport.

My photographs already live in more than 140 David Lloyd clubs across the UK and Europe, where they are seen by over one million members. I would love to bring Animal Fusion to Boston: to hotels in Back Bay and the Seaport, to restaurants and lounges, to spas and wellness spaces, to university and corporate collections, and to the homes of those who, like me, love wild nature, beauty and art.

If you are an interior designer, an art advisor or a hospitality professional in Boston or New England, I would be delighted to work with you: selecting works for a specific project, adapting formats to your walls, or preparing a larger series for a hotel or residential development. Contact me directly to discuss your project. And if I am in Boston, I would love to meet you, perhaps in the courtyard of the Gardner Museum.
