San Francisco: A City Born from Gold

San Francisco owes its very existence to gold. When gold was discovered in the Sierra foothills in 1848, a small settlement on the bay became, almost overnight, the gateway to the California Gold Rush. The strait at the entrance of the bay is still called the Golden Gate, and in the Civic Center, the gilded details of City Hall's great dome shine above the city, as the City and County of San Francisco recounts in its docent history. Its construction after the 1906 earthquake is documented by UC Berkeley's College of Environmental Design.

Zack Zublena's fine art photographs bring that golden heritage indoors. Real people, their bodies entirely covered in gold paint, emerge from deep black backgrounds like living sculptures, warm and luminous in a city of fog and soft grey light.

One of America's Great Photography Cities

Few cities take photography as seriously as San Francisco. At SFMOMA, the Pritzker Center for Photography offers one of the largest museum spaces in the United States devoted to the medium. On the Embarcadero, Pier 24 Photography presents exhibitions in a quiet, contemplative setting by appointment. And every January, FOG Design+Art brings leading galleries and designers to Fort Mason, overlooking the bay.

From the Legion of Honor in Lincoln Park to the de Young in Golden Gate Park, the city's museums sit in some of its most beautiful landscapes. Readers of the San Francisco Chronicle, the San Francisco Standard, 7x7 and the San Francisco Business Times know that art, design and innovation are part of the city's identity.

Hotels on the Hills and by the Bay

San Francisco's hotels range from the grand palaces of Nob Hill to design-driven boutiques in SoMa and waterfront hotels along the Embarcadero. Each competes to offer guests a sense of place, and art has become one of the clearest ways to create it.

  • Nob Hill and Union Square: grand historic lobbies call for art with classical presence and warmth.
  • The Embarcadero: waterfront hotels gain warmth from a single gold figure facing the grey bay.
  • SoMa and Hayes Valley: design hotels welcome contemporary photography with a bold signature.
  • Wine country resorts: in Napa and Sonoma, gold echoes the light over the vineyards at harvest.
  • Suites and spas: one photograph creates calm and identity in a guest room or treatment room.

Homes from Pacific Heights to the Peninsula

San Francisco's finest homes are shaped by hills, views and light. In Pacific Heights, Presidio Heights and Sea Cliff, grand houses look out over the Golden Gate. On Russian Hill and Nob Hill, apartments and townhouses frame the bay. South of the city, the estates of Atherton, Woodside and Hillsborough open onto gardens and oaks. Across the bridge, Belvedere and Tiburon offer waterfront homes, and further north, Napa and Sonoma welcome vineyard estates. Each calls for art that brings warmth to cool coastal light.

Workplaces and Wellness with a Human Touch

The Bay Area is home to some of the world's most influential companies, and their headquarters, lounges and executive floors increasingly use art to bring humanity to the workplace. The region is also a pioneer of wellness, from yoga studios to private clinics and luxury spas. Zack Zublena's gold figures, many of them yogis, dancers and athletes, belong naturally in these spaces. His work has been installed across more than 120 David Lloyd fitness and wellness clubs in the UK and Europe, seen by more than one million members. Read the David Lloyd story.

Practical Notes for San Francisco

  • Seismic safety: use security hangers that lock the frame to the wall, especially above beds and seating.
  • Fog and humidity: in Sea Cliff, Marin and waterfront homes, sealed conservation framing protects prints from moisture and salt.
  • Soft light: San Francisco's cool, grey days make warm, dimmable lighting essential to make the gold glow.
  • Hills and stairs: in Victorian and Edwardian homes, measure stairwells and doorways. A diptych or triptych is often easier to deliver than one very large piece.

A Golden Signature for Your Bay Area Space

Whether you are designing a hotel on Nob Hill, a headquarters in SoMa or a home in Pacific Heights, Atherton or Napa, the right photograph will bring warmth and presence through every foggy season.
