Animal Fusion in Aspen: Gold, the Lion and the Leopard in the Rocky Mountains

Every autumn, Aspen turns to gold. The aspen trees that gave the town its name light up the slopes of the Roaring Fork Valley, and for a few weeks the mountains glow like a gilded painting. For an artist who has spent ten years painting the human body in gold, there is no more beautiful invitation. That is why I wanted to bring Animal Fusion, my collection where the golden body meets the lion and the leopard, to Aspen.

Aspen is a unique place in the American art world. It is a small mountain town, yet it attracts some of the most passionate collectors on the planet. In winter, between two days on the slopes of Aspen Mountain or Snowmass, they walk through the galleries of the downtown core. In summer, they come for the music, the ideas and the light of the high mountains. Few places combine nature and culture with such intensity.

Aspen was born from silver: in the nineteenth century, it was a mining town. Today, I love the idea of bringing gold there, not gold dug out of the mountain, but gold painted by hand on the human body, as a symbol of light and transformation.

And there is a wild side to Aspen too. The surrounding mountains are home to elk, black bears and Colorado's own big cat, the mountain lion: silent, elusive, rarely seen. Wildness, here, is never far away. That meeting between refinement and the untamed is exactly what Animal Fusion is about.

It all began in South Africa, in 2012. It was there, in the golden light of the savanna, that I took my first steps as a professional photographer. I remember those mornings leaving before dawn, the silence of the bush, and the moment when, suddenly, a leopard appears in the tall grass and rests its gaze on you. That gaze never leaves you. It taught me patience, humility and respect. Above all, it taught me what presence truly means.

Since then, two passions have guided my life as an artist. On one side, the big cats I love so deeply. On the other, the human body painted in gold, and especially the woman: feline, magnetic, sovereign. For years, these two worlds lived separately in my work. With Animal Fusion, they finally meet.

From the African Savanna to the Rocky Mountains

I returned to South Africa, to the Greater Kruger region, where I was fortunate to stay at the magnificent lodges of Londolozi and Singita. There, nature is not a backdrop: it moves through you. You spend hours following a lioness and her cubs, waiting for a leopard to come down from its tree, watching for the perfect light at dusk.

I photographed the lions and leopards in this collection myself, in the wild, in their own territory. None of them comes from a stock library. Each one carries the memory of an encounter, a suspended moment I had the privilege to live.

I think anyone who loves Aspen understands that feeling. The great safari lodges and the great mountain chalets share the same spirit: wild nature just outside the window, and inside, warmth, wood, stone and beauty. In Colorado, mountain lions live in much of the state's mountain country, as discreet as the leopards I followed in Kruger.

The lion moves me with its nobility. It is the most social of all cats, and it is the lionesses who lead the hunt and protect the pride, as the Smithsonian's National Zoo reminds us. The leopard fascinates me with its mystery: solitary, agile, invisible until the very last moment, strong enough to carry its prey high into the trees, as National Geographic describes. One embodies sovereignty, the other enigma. Both embody a kind of absolute beauty.

The Golden Woman, Feline and Magnetic

Since 2016, I have been painting bodies in gold and photographing them as living sculptures. What has always struck me about the women I photograph is their feline side: a way of moving, of holding themselves, of looking into the lens with the same quiet intensity as a big cat in the savanna.

There is something of that in the spirit of Aspen: athletic, free, at ease in wild places. The same strength that carries a skier down a steep slope or a hiker up to the Maroon Bells carries the women of Animal Fusion. Grace and power, together.

With this collection, I wanted to make the invisible bond between woman and animal visible. The leopard's rosettes flow across golden skin. The lion's gaze melts into a woman's face. The figure does not wear the animal like a costume: she becomes it, the way a dancer becomes the music.

An Idea Three Thousand Years Old

I am not the first to dream of this fusion. In ancient Egypt, the lion-headed goddess Sakhmet, "the powerful one," embodied both strength and healing. Her statues, carved more than three thousand years ago, are preserved today at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. And that same civilization reserved gold for the gods, because it never tarnishes, as The Met explains in its essay on gold in ancient Egypt.

Aspen is a place where people come to think about big questions: about nature, about meaning, about what lasts. I like to think that Animal Fusion belongs in that conversation. The sacred animal and the sacred metal: two ancient languages, brought together for our time.

Real Women, Real Big Cats, Real Gold. No AI.

For me, this is essential. Every woman in this collection is a real person, whom I painted in gold by hand and photographed in the studio. Every big cat is a wild animal I photographed myself in South Africa. In an age of AI-generated images, I want every element of my work to have been lived, felt and shared. I explain this in more detail on my page No AI Art, Real People.

Aspen has a deep respect for craft. Since 1966, Anderson Ranch Arts Center in Snowmass Village has welcomed artists to work with their hands, from ceramics and woodworking to photography. Gold has been worked by hand for millennia, from Egyptian goldsmiths to the master gilders of Florence, and institutions like the Getty Conservation Institute still document these traditional crafts. My work humbly continues that lineage, with the human body as its surface.

What Each Work Carries

  • The lion and lioness: courage, leadership and radiant confidence.
  • The leopard: independence, intuition and quiet strength.
  • Gold: light, permanence and the sacred potential of the human body.

Animal Fusion in Aspen Chalets and Mountain Homes

Aspen homes are among the most beautiful in America: chalets of stone and reclaimed wood on Red Mountain, contemporary residences of glass and steel in the West End, ranches in Woody Creek and Starwood, ski-in ski-out homes in Snowmass. In these interiors, gold brings warmth. Against wood beams and stone fireplaces, it glows like firelight. When snow fills the windows, a golden figure becomes a source of light in the room.

There is a wonderful contrast in bringing the heat of the African savanna into a snowy mountain home. In a great room with a view of the peaks, a large lion print answers the majesty of the landscape. In a bedroom, a leopard adds sensuality and serenity. In an entrance, after a day in the cold, a golden figure welcomes every guest with warmth.

Pairs, Diptychs and Triptychs

I designed this collection as a dialogue. Two works hung side by side create rhythm, symmetry and a silent conversation between the woman and the animal. The double-height walls and vaulted ceilings of mountain homes are perfect for pairs, triptychs and large formats.

For Aspen Collectors, Interior Designers and Resorts

For such a small town, Aspen has an extraordinary art scene: the galleries of the downtown core, the Aspen Art Museum on Hyman Avenue, free and open to all, and Anderson Ranch in Snowmass Village. It is also a place of legendary hospitality, from historic hotels to slope-side resorts, private clubs and spas.

My photographs already live in more than 140 David Lloyd clubs across the UK and Europe, where they are seen by over one million members. I would love to bring Animal Fusion to Aspen: to hotels and resorts, to restaurants and après-ski lounges, to spas and wellness spaces, and to the chalets of those who, like me, love wild nature, beauty and gold.

If you are an interior designer, an art advisor or a hospitality professional in Aspen or the Roaring Fork Valley, I would be delighted to work with you: selecting works for a specific chalet, adapting formats to your walls, or preparing a larger series for a hotel or private club. Contact me directly to discuss your project.
